Jaina Island Statue
This piece was deaccessioned from the Mint Museum in North Carolina in 2004. Jaina (Hanal, the house of water often called The Maya Island of Death) is located on the west coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It was basically a necropolis for the Maya. Many graves of Maya nobility have been found on the island. Pieces from this island are very rare. It dates to between 600 AD - 850 AD and stands 9 inches tall.

If you look close at the bag you can see that the artist pressed cloth into the wet clay to make it look as if it were made of cloth
